“I love to see the joy in my employers’ eyes…they took someone from absolutely nothing at all, and taught her how to grow.”
Maria’s story* // Arab world
At 7 years old, instead of going to school, Maria became a maid to another family. She served the parents and raised their children. The children grew up, married and left the country, leaving Maria to nurse the elderly parents until their death. Maria was devastated when she found herself alone at 42, illiterate and without a job. At this point I met Maria and offered her a job. Ecstatic, she began work as a trainee baker. With literacy training and simply designed and written recipes, Maria is now proud as can be, baking a myriad of delicious products.
As is typical of Christians here, Maria was fearful and hostile towards Muslims, and had never talked with a Muslim until she began work with us. Through the supportive and enabling work environment, some of Maria’s closest friends are now her Muslim colleagues. She is overflowing with joy in God and what He has done in her life.
