Interserve Partners play a critical part in fulfilling our mission, walking alongside people from Asia and the Arab world, wherever they are. These people faithfully serve in their professions in many regions of the world. They are teachers, doctors, technicians, baristas, businessmen and women, and so much more. As they serve, they become neighbours and friends in the community bringing hope and love, with great impact.

Many of these workers are also parents. They have left their homes and moved with their children to the place they’re called to. And children require education.

Did you know that one of the primary reasons for cross-cultural workers returning to their home country has to do with their children’s education?

To be sustainable, we need to increase funding to support education for Interserve families. Could you help?

Your donation of $2 or more to the Children’s Education Fund is tax-deductible in Australia.

If I didn’t go to [an international school], my life would be very different. I would have had to learn the local language fluently, which would have been very difficult. The school I go to is very good, with extremely thorough education compared to the public schools in this country. I’m very grateful for how people have supported me; I am so blessed to be able to have a good education in the country where my parents are serving. I hope other kids can have the same experience as me.

Why is this important?

In most cases, school-age children attend schools that teach a Western curriculum. This could be an international school, or a local school that teaches the UK or US curriculum.

  • Kids’ wellbeing

    Most will agree that school has a huge impact on a child’s wellbeing. It’s in schools where friends are made, where social connection and learning happens. With the right education, kids develop dreams and goals and become the person who they are. Sending kids to schools that provide a safe cultural setting has a huge impact on the long-term wellbeing of children, while also keeping on track with their academic benchmarks.

    Depending on the location, in some cases an international school may also be physically safer than a local school.

  • Enabling Partners’ work

    Often, one of the primary reasons for our Partners’ returning to Australia has to do with their children’s education. When suitable schooling options are not available, or the cost can’t be covered, families may need to send their kids to boarding school in a different country or return back to Australia. This means that the Partners’ investment in language and culture learning is cut short, and the people they are serving miss out on the transformational impact they bring to communities.

  • Recognised education

    Interserve Partners are serving in their host country long-term, often for many years. Providing a quality education for their children is so important for when their overseas service comes to end and children need to re-integrate into a local Australian school.

    It’s imperative that prior learning is recognised and that a student can enter into a school and continue their education, in the same language and in an aligned curriculum. Students finishing high school may want to go on to tertiary studies, and a requirement for western universities is a solid and equivalent education. This way, students are able to have a vision and direction of where their academic developments should progress towards, providing the same career options they would have at home.

  • Cost of education

    Frequently, the biggest costs for Partners living in other countries is their children’s education. We estimate the combined cost of school fees for Interserve families based overseas is about $200,000 AUD each year. This is a real need, and without funds raised for children’s education, families need to return home when their children get into school.

Partners have a financial Team Support target which includes covering the costs for their children’s education. They seek to raise committed, regular Team Support givers to support them in their ministry.

Team Support is a model whereby a group of people commits to supporting a worker through regular prayer, practical support, relationship, and financial support. All long-term Partners raise Team Support. Through participating in all aspects of Team Support, members of the Australian church can help sustain workers practically, spiritually and emotionally. Learn more about Team Support here.

The purpose of the Children’s Education Fund is to support Interserve families with costs associated with the education of their children.

Interserve is committed to supporting all of our school-aged families. The funds in the Children’s Education Fund are administered with discretion, according to need.
