“The Middle East is in chaos – to such an extent it has become a threat to international peace and security.”
UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres
What a depressing statement! This region, so familiar to us through Bible stories, seems to be overwhelmingly characterised by despair. But the stories of God at work in and through His people do not stop where the Bible ends.
God is at work in the Middle East today as much as ever!
Its spiritual fervour, its faithful ancient church, its significant needs and its hospitable people invite us to engage these communities with the compassion and love of Jesus Christ.
Interserve’s team focuses on equipping Arab Christians to provide better health and disability services and to use media technologies to educate and inspire. Together, they’re operating social enterprises that improve standards of living, care for refugees and build peace between different ethnic and faith communities. We believe we are entering a new season of fruitfulness despite the risks and challenges of living and working amidst ‘chaos’.
Here in Australia, you and I have new opportunities to share our lives and abundance with people from the Middle East. Interserve’s CultureConnect team has 16 people working regularly with more than 250 Middle Easterners and has trained over 500 Australians in the last 12 months to better understand and reach out to them, as ‘they’ become ‘us’.
Did you know that less than 0.1% of global mission funds go to the Middle East?
Interserve’s desire is to see Australian Christians be bridge-builders and peacemakers both at home and abroad and to see Middle Eastern Christians be equipped, empowered and resourced to transform their own communities. We want to say with the Apostle Paul, “Because we loved you so much, we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well”. (1 Thessalonians 2:8)

A CultureConnect worker tells us of Elsie, a young woman from the Middle East who found love in a detention centre, marrying and having her first child. Soon after the birth, her husband was deported to his country of birth, a place she has never been. Now a single first-time mother without the support of family, she relies heavily on our team as she manages daily life. We can minister to thousands of people from the Middle East in our neighbourhoods.
In the Middle East, a social enterprise run by Interservers provides training and a livelihood for people from poor and marginalised communities, helping them support their families. By intentionally employing both Christians and Muslims, two groups that typically avoid any meaningful interaction, this organisation is fostering a work culture of respect and building bridges of peace.
Interserve is a global community of ordinary Christians taking action in faith. We seek to be good stewards of your support and this is how your gift is used.
Interserve is a community of ordinary people following Jesus Christ amongst the peoples of Asia and the Arab world.
Motivated by Christ’s heart of compassion and justice, and in partnership with His church, we share our skills and experience to change tomorrow by what we do today.
